JAMBO! This is our story...<\/p>
For the last two and half years I (Andrea) have been living in Nairobi with my family. During this time I've been working with the GEC community primary school in the slum area of Kawangware. I've been singing and reading with the kids on a weekly basis and fundraising to help improve their offering within the community.<\/p>
When Covid hit we had to fight hard to keep the school open through 10 months of closures in 2020, and then further weeks of closures in early 2021. All schools are fee paying in Kenya and without the students' fees coming in the school couldn't pay its rent. We crowd-funded the rent money which covered the school for almost a year and we also managed to feed the most vulnerable kids throughout the school closures.<\/p>
Once the government reopened the schools it became clear that many parents had lost their jobs due to the pandemic. Headteacher Mrs Betty has been determined to keep the GEC children in school, even if their parents can't pay the fees. They have a high number of vulnerable children who are better off in school, where they are fed and safe.<\/p>
To help the school become self-sustainable, the children have designed a t-shirt incorporating their favourite African proverbs.<\/p>
100% of profits from the sale of these shirts goes to the upkeep of the school; paying rent, teacher's salaries and starting a breakfast club to give the children two free meals a day.<\/p>
Teemill shirts are made with only natural materials. They are 100% Organic Cotton and renewable energy is used throughout the supply chain.<\/p>
